Courses Offered.

RYA Day Skipper Practical Motor

Once you've got some miles under your belt and want to skipper your own yacht, it's time to take your Day Skipper course!

During the course we'll help you to achieve the required standard of pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling to ensure that you can skipper a yacht safely by day in familiar waters. It's not obligatory to have taken the shore based Day Skipper theory course prior the practical course, but it certainly helps and will boost your confidence and skippering ability.

Suggested minimum pre-course requirement: 2 days practical experience on a motor boat.

Assumed knowledge: Basic navigation and seamanship, completion of Day Skipper Theory course (recommended).

Course content: Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship, navigation, emergency situations, meteorology, rules of the road, engine maintenance and minor repairs, victualling and crew welfare.

Ability after course: Be able to skipper a vessel safely in familiar waters by day, and be able to deal with unforeseen or emergency situations.

Minimum age: 16 years.

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor Cruising

This course is designed for those who want to cruise further afield and will provide the skipper with all the skills and techniques to take a motor yacht on coastal and offshore passages by day and by night to new sailing areas.

Each student will skipper the yacht over a longer passage, involving detailed pilotage and passage planning. It is recommended that you complete the Shorebased Coastal Skipper theory course beforehand.

Suggested pre-course minimum requirement: 15 days sea time (2 days as skipper) 300 nautical miles, 8 night hours.

Assumed knowledge: Navigation to Coastal Skipper shorebased standard. Practical ability to Day Skipper practical standard.

Course content: Passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making and ability as skipper, yacht handling under power and sail, adverse weather conditions and emergency situations.

Ability after course: Be able to skipper a vessel on coastal passages by day and by night

Minimum age: 17.

RYA Yacht Master preparation and exam

An RYA Yacht master needs a wealth of experience, not only to cope with plain sailing and passage making, but also to be able to cope with demanding conditions and emergency situations.

Passing the exam is often the first step that many seafarers will take before they go on to work within the marine industry, the Certificate of Competence is recognized globally and allows the holder to skipper a vessel up to 150 miles from a safe haven. The exam is taken by an external RYA examiner, and can last 36 hours, depending on the number of candidates. The Yacht master Offshore license is also a pre-requisite for students wishing to apply for the Yacht master Ocean Certificate of Competence.

During the Monday to Friday preparation course, we review all aspects of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in order to successfully pass the RYA Yacht master exam, but of course candidates should already be of a very high standard and should be able to meet the following criteria:

Minimum 2500NM logged, half of which must have been in tidal waters.

50 days at sea, at least 5 as Skipper.

5 passages of at least 60NM, 2 of which as Skipper and 2 of which having involved night sailing.

Knowledge of theory to Yacht master Coastal / Offshore level.

Candidates will also need to be in possession of:

An SRC (VHF) operator's certificate.*

A STCW 1st Aid certificate.*

Yachtmaster Coastal: Candidates who are not able to meet the criteria for the Offshore exam may wish to consider taking the Yachtmaster Coastal exam which allows the holder to skipper a vessel up to 60 miles from a safe haven. This licence can also be commercially endorsed.

Commercial Endorsement: Yachtmaster licences can be commercially endorsed allowing the holder to work within the marine industry. Applicants will need to provide a Medical fitness certificate, complete the online RYA PPR (Professional Practices and Responsibilities) which LA Costa Yachting can provide, and undertake an STCW Sea Survival Course.
